Raku Saturday Morning Session
Raku Saturday Morning 10am -1pm
February 28, March 7, 14, 21, 28
Raku is a traditional Japanese pottery style known for its black clay and crackled glaze. Pieces are taken from the kiln while still glowing hot (about 1800°F) and placed in a container filled with combustible materials, which ignite and create a sealed environment of smoke and fire. This dramatic firing process gives Raku its unique, unpredictable patterns and colors.
This course is open to all skill levels and covers both hand-building and wheel-throwing techniques. Final glazing will emphasize white and green crackle glazes. You’ll receive fifteen pounds of clay and glazes, with extra clay available for purchase.
Classes include demonstrations of wheel and handbuilding methods. I’ll also cover Raku’s history, kiln building variations, and a range of Raku firing and glazing techniques.
